A selection of wool and cotton tapestries designed by Salma Barakat, handmade in collaboration with artisans in Egypt.
SERIES I
Designed by observing the rhythmic patterns found in foliage, streams and rock formations, resulting in a visual expression that is both fluid and repetitive. Dialogue between weaver and artist is transformed in an exercise to mimic the meditative state invoked by nature.
SERIES II
A collection of textile works derived from the abstract shapes in Arabic letters. Fluid script-like forms flow down panelled wall-hangings and cascade across sweeping kilims. The outcome is a series of Asemetic writing based on gestural ink strokes.
SERIES III
Translating paper collages into tactile works, the collection uses hand-cut colour blocks and layering to create visual tension. Developed in a thicker wool weave, the pieces work both as rugs and wall-hangings.
